To tell the truth Doug Hiser’s life is a cartoon: funny, extravagant, creative, exciting and many of those “Coyote falls off the cliff and lands with a puff of dust at the bottom.” Student of the Year at the University of Houston Clear Lake with a degree in Applied Design and Visual art he studied with Sondria Hyu and Nick Devries.

He is an author of many books, (Secret Grotto, The Honey Bee Girl, Crow Canyon, Tropical Calypso, Cavern of the Eggstone, Wink-Eye Creek, Bite of the Mailman, Lost Oasis,) a poetry slam winner and producer, a professional artist and art teacher, a football/soccer coach, an eco-tourism specialist, a journalist, a retired mailman, (that's another story) a public speaker at conferences and schools, and there is also a bunch of stuff he used to do, like, play every sport imaginable, karate, a competitive bodybuilder for about ten years, and in 1992 he was on the American Gladiators television show.

Doug Hiser represented the Texas Soccer team in 2004 in Oahu, Hawaii as the goalkeeper for the Veteran’s Cup Tournament. Recently, this year he has been the featured artist at Galveston’s Feather Fest and also at Armand Bayou’s Earth Day Celebration. He was the guest speaker and workshop presenter at the Bay Area Writer’s League Conference at University of Houston this May, 2009 and is annual Author at the Giddings Word Wrangler Event.

He has published many award winning short stories. He entered his first art show in 1980 and won Best of Show with a pen and ink. His art has won numerous awards from The Bay Area Artist Colony first place show to the Texas City Art Festival first place. Doug Hiser’s art ranges from the realm of his own creation of “Elaborism”-the illumination of wildlife art-to the world of odd and strange things, dabbling in surrealism and hyper-abstraction.

From Santa Fe, Texas, he was born to catch cottonmouth water moccasin snakes and grab armadillos by the tail. He still likes being out in the wilderness and exploring, except now it is in Costa Rica or Canada or the Florida Everglades.

Doug Hiser paints to create new images to convey an awareness of the world around us and captures the magic that we should never lose in nature. He writes stories that fill the world with new sights. His creations, art or writing, influences you to grab your friend or the closest person and insist they take notice of what he has fashioned. His unique observations, paintings, and exotic words are thrilling and the emotions he instills in us from his work hang around after the words and images are over.

Doug Hiser is now a proud employee of the Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Seabrook. He conducts workshops in writing, teaches art, and produces between 60 and 80 pieces of fine art a year. His wife is Gayln Blinka-Hiser, a coach at Creekside Intermediate School. He has a daughter, Heather, a son, Cade, and a step son, Myles.

The Brazoswood Bucs scored 14 points in the first quarter of Saturday’s afternoon game but the Clear Brook Wolverines scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and get the big win needed to stay in the District 24-5A race, 27-21.

Clear Brook was 0-2 in District play and needed to get in the win column.  In the first quarter they drove down the field and Brandon Ellison rumbled in for a touchdown from 26 yards away, giving the Wolverines a 7-0 lead, after Yelovich’s extra point kick, with 6:52 left in the first quarter.

Brazoswood was quick to respond and scored back to back touchdowns.  Chase Matzke tossed a 17 yard touchdown pass to Marquelle Davis with 4:17 left and then  with 2:21 left in the first quarter Kristian Blalock broke a 25 yard run to give the Bucs a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Clear Brook responded with 6:58 left with Kendrick Kennard’s 25 yard touchdown run, but the Wolverines missed the extra point, making the score 14-13.  The end zone was unfamiliar territory for the rest of the first half and Brazoswood took a one point lead into halftime.

The halftime show was a wondrous affair considering the cloudy overcast gray day and the windy conditions but the bands and dancers, frolicked and played with exuberance seeming to enjoy the coolest weather this season.

The Brazoswood Bus came out from halftime with a mission to score and it only took them until 6:58 in the third quarter to pile more points on top of the Wolverines, when Ricky Lunford ran into the end zone from 5 yards out, giving the Bucs a 21-13 lead.

The rest of the third quarter was a defensive struggle and the Bucs score was all that the quarter would see.  The Bucs scoring for the night was over as the fourth quarter belonged to the Clear Brook Wolverines.  With 11:52 left in the fourth quarter, Kendrick Kennard ran in for a 3 yard score, closing the Buc’s lead to 21-19, after the Wolverines try for two points failed.

Time was running out on the Wolverines and somebody somewhere needed to make a play to get the Wolverines the ball.  They needed a hero to step up.  Clear Brook found their hero and his name is Ikenna Ikpeama.  Ikpeama intercepted the Bucs’s pass with only 2:57 seconds left in the game, giving the Wolverines a chance to get another score on offense.

Clear Brook was running out of time and out of downs when they found themselves with a fourth and five-situation with only 1:09 left in the game, trailing 21-19.  The next play was for the game and the Bucs never knew what hit them-when the running attack of the Wolverine’s was put into the garage and out came a surprise pass from Michael Donovan to Cameron Newson for 30 yards and a Clear Brook touchdown.  The shocker gave the Wolverine’s a 25-21 lead and then Brandon Ellison ran in the two point try bringing the lead up to 27-21.  The Bucs last attempt ran out with the time clock and Clear Brook had come from behind in dramatic fashion to get their first District win.  Clear Brook ended the night with 276 total yards to the Buc’s 320.

This Friday Clear Brook takes on cross town rival Clear Lake at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium at 7 pm.  Both teams need the win with identical records in District play at 1-2.  Thursday evening at 7pm in League City the District leading Clear Creek Wildcats, 3-0, will meet the Clear Springs Chargers, 2-1, in a heated battle for first place.
