The Blue Angels will streak once more over our Sky at “Wings Over Houston”
Dozens and dozens of flying machines will fly over Ellington Airport on Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st as Wings Over Houston returns for its 25th Anniversary celebration performance. The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, “The Blue Angels,” will return to the show from a long absence, last performing in Houston in 1998.

Media Day was Tuesday, October 6th and vintage airplanes were used to fly demonstrations over our local area. The planes consisted of an AT-6, a Tail Diver, a Tora Japanese replica, a Vietnam War Helicopter, a B-17 bomber and a B-25. Climbing aboard a B-25 and viewing the earth below from a glass bubble in the very nose of the large two-propeller airplane was extremely exhilarating; and a little scary too. Watching the pilots man the control panels with all of the levers and instrumentation creates a whole new respect and awe for what they do. These brave guys take a super heavy object and crank up an old motor in it, and then guide this huge metal thing filled with people, up off the ground and high into the air.
Wings Over Houston is a non-profit event produced by a monstrous volunteer effort. The Gulf Coast Wing and West Squadron of the Commemorative Air, and strong support from the Lone star Flight Museum in Galveston brings this awesome show to our area each year and has for the past 25 years, attracting over 70,000 people attending each year.
One of the highlights of the Airshow will be the “out of control” antics of a pilot who has thrilled millions worldwide, Michael Goulian. With Michael Goulian, the sky is never the limit because the man has no limits. His acrobatic air stunts are astounding, and he exclaims, “The fans come to see the limits of man and machine and I never want to let them down!” He performs some of the world’s most complex aerial maneuvers and his wild tricks in the sky bring gasps of awe and amazement from fans everywhere he has piloted.
The Blue Angels and Performance Pilot Michael Goulian are only a part of this massive air show. Also featured will be The Horseman, 3 ship P51 Mustang act, Tora Tora Tora with B-17, The AV-8 Harrier, the Famous MQ1 Predator Unmanned Vehicle, 727 Zero Gravity Corp, Apache Helicopters, The Remax Jump Team, the Vietnam Firepower Demo, and many, many more vintage and exciting flying aircraft.
The sights and sounds of being up so close to so many interesting types of flying machines will amaze you and give you a sense of pride in the ingenuity of mankind. Men had always dreamed of flying in the sky like the birds and one day two brothers, named Wright, actually achieved the first sustained flight, in 1903, not that many years ago. The Wings Over Houston Air Show is a celebration of what men have accomplished since that momentous day in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Come be a part of a day that will thrill your imagination, and share with your family the fun and excitement of a wonderful festival at Ellington Airport’s “Wings Over Houston” 2009.
