Clear Brook Volleyball Team Digs Deep and pulls out the Win against Clear Creek
Tuesday night the Clear Brook volleyball team, 6-1 District record, hosted Clear Creek, 5-2 in District play. It was “intermediate night” with young jr. high volleyball players from Westbrook and Brookside schools in attendance. There was a whole lot of chanting and stomping, “Let’s Go Clear Brook” from the home crowd. Clear Brook responded after a long night, winning 3 out of 5.
Clear Creek scored the first point of the match and both teams battled all the way to a 14-14 tie. Clear Brook began to pull away when they were inspired by 3 huge blocks by Anita Permenter and Gabby Pinto. They didn’t look back and took game one 25-20.
Game two started with Clear Creek winning the first point once again and this time both teams would not let each other get any advantage. This was an intense match with the girls on both sides determined to win every point. They had played up to a 19-19 tie when Madeline Gaffney and Cherish Krohn slammed down spike after spike, and right when the game was getting intense, the ref called a “net” violation giving Clear Creek the win 25-22.
A winning game in each team’s back pocket; the third game could be the turning point and for the third straight game Clear Creek won the first point of the match. At 3-3 the game saw Clear Brook pull away and never relinquish the lead again. Alicia Dittrich dominated game three with 7 major “kills” even though Clear Creek’s Rachel Hobaugh slammed down four of her own. Hobaugh is a smashing hitter, packing an awesome wallop, and surprisingly she is only 5’9.” The Lady Wolverines ruled the floor with a 25-17 win of game three, they now had the lead 2-1.
There were no cheerleaders at this game but the fans more than made up for it with cheers and thunderous stomping of their own. Game four saw Clear Creek’s “kill” production total their best of the night, ripping 13 down. Madeline Gaffney and Cherish Krohn controlled this game and Clear Brook looked dazed by the dominating way they were beaten, 25-15. The games had led up to a game five and after the way the Lady Wolverines had just gotten smashed by the Lady Wildcats it seemed Clear Creek would take the victory home.
The final and deciding game Clear Brook had regrouped and found Alicia Dittrich on the first set of the game and she set the tone for the rest of the game, hammering it with a tomahawk strike, straight down into oblivion, getting Clear Brook the first point. Before Clear Creek knew what had hit them the dust cleared and it was 5-1. Coach Scott Simonds called a “Time Out” to reset his team. The Lady Wolverines now had control of the momentum and pummeled spike after spike, 8-3, 10-3, 12-6, 13-8, 14-10.
The crowd was going wild and the ref stopped the game. A group of students had caused some disturbance that the ref deemed needing looking into. The next thing that happened was a police officer had removed over thirty students from the gym and the game resumed. Clear Brook slammed it down and pandemonium filled the gym as they won 15-10, 3 games to 5.
Clear Brook now stays one game behind District leader Clear Lake and two games ahead of Clear Creek. Clear Brook ended the night with 57 “kills to Clear Creek’s 45 “kills.”
