Wolverines and Wildcats, “Claws Out” in First District Matchup This Friday!
The Wild Beasts will be unleashed, the mighty marching bands will strut forth and blast triumphant fight songs into the League City air, Cheerleaders will flip and flop all over the turf, and the fans will scream for their team, Clear Creek Wildcats or the Clear Brook Wolverines. Expect a standing room only crowd as the rivals meet at Veteran’s Memorial stadium September 25, Friday night at 7 pm. This night is also Clear Brook’s Homecoming game, giving it added importance.
Both the Wildcats and the Wolverines bring identical matching records into District play at 1-2-0. Clear Creek has an edge in total defense, allowing only 58 points scored against them this season. Clear Brook’s defense has allowed almost twice that at 104 points against them.
The teams contrast in offense styles, almost as if watching the “new school” Wildcats in their wide open spread offense and “old school” with the Wolverines option running ground game that churns up yards and the clock. The Wolverines have a heavy edge in offense by piling up 118 points in three games to the Wildcats 37 points in the same amount of games played.
Clear Creek has quick strike ability and plenty of speed while Clear Brook has an experienced team with a punishing running game that pounds away and wears down opponents. Clear Brook has averaged a whopping 389 yards in rushing this season while Clear Creek has averaged 108 yards rushing.
The Wolverines rarely pass the ball but when they do they usually surprise their opponent and create big plays, touchdowns and key first downs. Their passing yardage is miniscule, averaging only 68 yards. In stark contrast the Clear Creek Wildcats passing yardage averaging almost 170 yards a game.
When just looking at stats you might think the Wolverines have a huge edge, averaging 457 yards a game dwarfing the Wildcats average yards a game at 277, but this is a rivalry and anything can happen when these two square off. Throw out the stats and hold on to your seat when the two rival schools mix it up on Friday night. These matchups produce all kinds of wild plays and exciting finishes.
Clear Brook has averaged almost 40 points a game with their running attack and their defense. If they continue to score like that on Friday night the Wildcats will have to light it up every time they have the ball to stay in the game because in the past three games they have only averaged 12 points a game. Clear Creek’s defense will be a key to stopping the Clear Brook option ground game.
Players to watch for Clear Creek are Jarryd Garza, #7, passing for over 150 yards a game and #5 Marcus Mata rushing for over 70 yards a game.
Standout players that lead the Wolverines on offense are #33 big Brandon Ellison averaging over 150 yards rushing a game and Michaek Donovan #10 getting over 140 total yards, passing and rushing a game.
This is what Texas Friday night football is all about. The place will be loud. The intensity will be so thick it will make the air heavy with anticipation. The bright lights will be buzzed by flying moths and insects, while nighthawks dive in the darkness over the stadium. Fans will cheer on their sons and daughters, their friends and students. The Wildcats meet the Wolverines on Clear Brook’s Homecoming and both teams have a lot to play for in their first and only District meeting.
Wear maroon or wear black, red, and silver, but squeeze into the stadium and watch the drama unfold as our young athletes play their hearts out on a Texas Friday Night.
