To tell the truth Doug Hiser’s life is a cartoon: funny, extravagant, creative, exciting and many of those “Coyote falls off the cliff and lands with a puff of dust at the bottom.” Student of the Year at the University of Houston Clear Lake with a degree in Applied Design and Visual art he studied with Sondria Hyu and Nick Devries.

He is an author of many books, (Secret Grotto, The Honey Bee Girl, Crow Canyon, Tropical Calypso, Cavern of the Eggstone, Wink-Eye Creek, Bite of the Mailman, Lost Oasis,) a poetry slam winner and producer, a professional artist and art teacher, a football/soccer coach, an eco-tourism specialist, a journalist, a retired mailman, (that's another story) a public speaker at conferences and schools, and there is also a bunch of stuff he used to do, like, play every sport imaginable, karate, a competitive bodybuilder for about ten years, and in 1992 he was on the American Gladiators television show.

Doug Hiser represented the Texas Soccer team in 2004 in Oahu, Hawaii as the goalkeeper for the Veteran’s Cup Tournament. Recently, this year he has been the featured artist at Galveston’s Feather Fest and also at Armand Bayou’s Earth Day Celebration. He was the guest speaker and workshop presenter at the Bay Area Writer’s League Conference at University of Houston this May, 2009 and is annual Author at the Giddings Word Wrangler Event.

He has published many award winning short stories. He entered his first art show in 1980 and won Best of Show with a pen and ink. His art has won numerous awards from The Bay Area Artist Colony first place show to the Texas City Art Festival first place. Doug Hiser’s art ranges from the realm of his own creation of “Elaborism”-the illumination of wildlife art-to the world of odd and strange things, dabbling in surrealism and hyper-abstraction.

From Santa Fe, Texas, he was born to catch cottonmouth water moccasin snakes and grab armadillos by the tail. He still likes being out in the wilderness and exploring, except now it is in Costa Rica or Canada or the Florida Everglades.

Doug Hiser paints to create new images to convey an awareness of the world around us and captures the magic that we should never lose in nature. He writes stories that fill the world with new sights. His creations, art or writing, influences you to grab your friend or the closest person and insist they take notice of what he has fashioned. His unique observations, paintings, and exotic words are thrilling and the emotions he instills in us from his work hang around after the words and images are over.

Doug Hiser is now a proud employee of the Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Seabrook. He conducts workshops in writing, teaches art, and produces between 60 and 80 pieces of fine art a year. His wife is Gayln Blinka-Hiser, a coach at Creekside Intermediate School. He has a daughter, Heather, a son, Cade, and a step son, Myles.

Brook vs Lake Volleyball-“Battle of the Unbeatens” (Undefeated Clear Lake takes on undefeated cross-town rival Clear Brook)

This Tuesday, September 22, 2009, the undefeated Clear Lake Lady Falcons meet up, at their home gym, with the only other undefeated team in District 24-5A, the Clear Brook Lady Wolverines. Both teams are 3 and 0 and they have not played any common opponents.

Clear Brook has defeated last years District Champion, Clear Creek, and also defeated Dickinson and Brazoswood.  Clear Brook’s wins got more convincing as each match took place beating Clear Creek 3-2, and then Dickinson, 3-1, finally blanking Brazoswood 3-0.

Clear Lake got their wins against Galveston Ball, Clear Springs and Alvin.  The Lady Wolverines have shown steady improvement in each game.  Clear Lake has earned their wins with a more dominating style, finishing Galveston Ball, 3-0, Clear Springs, 3-1, and then Alvin, 3-0.

The other key matchup between our teams around the lake will be at Clear Creek High School, where the Lady Wildcats take on the cross-town rival Clear Springs Lady Chargers.  All four CCISD will be in action against each other.  Fans can pick their poison by choosing to watch the undefeated Clear Lake vs Clear Brook battle or stay south of the lake and attend the game between Clear Creek and Clear Springs.

The Clear Spring’s attack features last week “kill” leader, Tori Whitworth, and Clear Creek has an impressive player of their own in the six-footer, Madeline Gaffney.  Clear Creek Coach Scott Simonds will be looking to knock off another district opponent to stay in the running behind Clear Brook and Clear Lake.  Clear Springs, with the same record as Clear Creek, has Coach Rhonda Rust readying her team to pull off a big win and take a step beyond the Lady Wildcats in the District race.

With four seniors from last year’s playoff team, Coach Meredith Thompson of the Clear Brook Lady Wolverines has gotten her team off to a fast undefeated start and she is pleased.  Coach Thompson had remarked that with four starters back they should be out of the gate and into the District lead and that is exactly what has happened.  Clear Lake’s Coach Chanda Eager has a multi-faceted attack with standout players like Ashley Power, Logen Bourque, Kate Foley, and Lauren Horelka, and sophomore Kiara Wright.

Clear Brook and Clear Lake will find out who will sit atop District 24-5A after their meeting Tuesday night.  The “Battle of the Unbeatens” will be the place to be and I would be surprised if it didn’t go down all the way to the last game, the last point.
