Nassau Bay is Ready for Neighbors to Grill, Chat, and Enjoy the Evening! (National Night Out is Tuesday, October 6th, 2009!)
This is your opportunity, not just in Nassau Bay, but in Clear Lake, League City, Seabrook, Kemah, Webster, and all our local communities to go outside and meet your neighbors and socialize. This is an exceptional opportunity to meet and get to know the people who live in your neighborhood better. By being familiar with the people in your neighborhood you are protecting each other from crime. Keep your neighborhood safe by participating in National Night Out.
NATW, The National Association of Town Watch, was the organization that Executive Director Matt A. Perskin piloted and created National Night Out in 1984, “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”
The NATW is a nonprofit organization that works with crime watch groups and law inforcement agencies nationwide. In 1984, the year it was introduced, National Night Out had 400 communities in 23 states participate, about 2.5 million people. The “Night Out” has grown like weeds on a dirt pile and now 35.4 million people in 11,310 communities in all of the States in America participate.
In the beginning the event consisted of a policy of porch and house “lights on” and a front porch vigil, but now the event has becoem a full blown community social gathering with block parties, cookouts, contests, meetings, walks, festivals, and even parades in some towns.
This is the night communities promote police and neighborhood partnerships against crime and a general neighborhood comraderie. Interaction with the people who live in your area is the prime directive, encouraging participation to detere crime and criminal activity in neighborhoods with high profile citizen watches.
Nassau Bay has their “National Night Out” planned to have Volunteer Firefighters and Nassau Bay Police Department Officers stopping at as many block parties as feasible to visit and get to know the neighborhood citizens. Nassau Bay has divided their city into sections, and they have a map of the sections, with a block Captain in each, sponsoring a gathering of some sort. Block Captains will provide cold drinks and water for attendees who are encouraged to bring snacks.
The planners of Nassau Bay’s National Night Out also agree that nothing is required and encourages people to just “Show Up” and participate, even empty handed. People are encouraged to go out and “shake” as many hands as you can that night. Meet many interesting neighbors that you never had a chance to see before. This night should mold your neighborhood into a better place to live, safer, and more familiar to each person’s family.

If your city doesn’t have an event for this night, October 6th, please organize and observe such a wonderful opportunity to get outside and visit with your neighbors! Everybody should put on their best smile and walk down the street saying, “HI!” and HELLO!” to everybody else, just like true Texans. Protect your neighborhood against crime, become friends with all the people who live near you and watch over each other, it’s the best cure for crime there is.
