Clear Brook Wolverines Football Team Drops Another Heartbreaker
Two weeks ago the Wolverines of Clear Brook High School played a great game only to lose by one point to Aldine Nimitz 49-48. This last week the Wolverines met Strake Jesuit and brought their tremendous ground attack to them, rushing for 457 yards, but it wasn’t enough.
Strake Jesuit took advantage of Clear Brook’s 5 fumbles and recovered three of them, returning one for a touchdown. They also had fewer penalties, 3 for twenty yards while the Wolverines had 6 for thirty three yards.
The game began with Strake Jesuit striking first with Quarterback Hunter Shiro completing an 80 yard touchdown reception. A minute later Clear Brook fumbled and Strake Jesuit ran it in and then threw a 2 point conversion, making the score 15-0 with only a few minutes gone in the first quarter. The Wolverines roared back and Brandon Ellison took a 26 yard run in for a score while Aaron Yelovich kicked the extra point. Clear Brook’s Brandon Ellison wasn’t finished and on their next possession he exploded with a 98 yard run, but the try for two failed and the score at the half was 15-13.
The battle continued through a scoreless third quarter until, with only 7 seconds left in the period, Strake Jesuit’s Jordan Hollingsworth broke a 51 yard run for a score, and as the quarter ended the score was 22-13 Strake Jesuit.
The Wolverines responded halfway through the fourth quarter with a short 4 yard touchdown run by Kendrick Kennard, edging the Wolverines closer, 22-20. The Wolverines mounted another drive but the fumble bug got them again and Strake Jesuit took their mistake and made them pay, because, evidently they weren’t finished scoring and with a twenty seven yard pass scored again increasing their lead, 29-20.
Clear Brook is a tough team, with a “never quit” attitude and they regrouped and with less than 3 minutes left in the game they drove into the red zone. They finally scored another touchdown with only 55 seconds left in the game, bringing the score to 29-27.
Last week they lost by one point, and this last game they lose by two, next week they get a week off and return to action on Friday, September 25, at 7 pm, at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in League City against District Rivals the Clear Creek Wildcats.
The Clear Brook Wolverines had more total yards than Strake Jesuit with 480 yards vs 366 yards. The Wolverines also led in first downs with 23 to Strake Jesuits 15. The fumbles hurt the Wolverines and without those costly mistakes the game would most likely had a different outcome. The Wolverines are a dominating football team and a District favorite. In two weeks District competiton begins and they should be ready for another Championship run.
