The Clear Springs Charger Football Team Destroys the Apollos
It’s CLEAR that the Chargers of Clear Springs High School have plenty of athletic players and lots of speed as they appear to be gliding around scoring touchdowns at will in a one-sided win over Sharpstown, 47-8.
Last year, 2008, before District play began, the Sharpstown Apollos and the Clear Springs Chargers met and played a close game with the Apollos squeaking out a tight victory and beating the Chargers. This year the Chargers took revenge and it was sweet, dominating the game in every way except for one lone touchdown by the Sharpstown bunch. Brandon Smith ripped off a 52 yard touchdown run for the Apollos in the first quarter and that’s what made the Chargers mad enough to shut them down for the rest of the game.
The first quarter of the game was the most competitive with a score of 19 to 8, and that was the last time the Apollo’s offense would see the light at the back of the end zone. The Clear Spring’s defense dominated the game with spectacular play by Trevon Randle who not only rushed on offense for a 6 yard touchdown, but at linebacker, intercepted a pass, and accumulated 5 solo tackles. Other amazing defensive performances were put in by Khary Alexcee, with 5 tackles and a sack of Sharpstown’s quarterback. Dallas McCarty had 5 tackles and a sack, along with Donnie Baggs 4 tackles.
The second quarter thrilled Clear Spring’s fans with two more touchdowns for the Chargers bringing the score at halftime to: Chargers 33, Apollos 8. Last week’s win over Manvel was led by backup quarterback Dylan Doebler, but this week, starter Phillip Miller returned to throw three touchdown passes, including one to Doebler and a total of 234 passing yards.
The top receivers for the Chargers were De Che Milburn, catching 10 passes and totaling 99 yards, with Dylan Doebler catching three for 31 yards. James Cunningham scored twice, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown, and Dimitri Donald also added an extra touchdown with a 13 yard run.
The third quarter and the fourth quarter the Chargers added one touchdown in each and closed out the win, 47 to 8. The Clear Springs offensive rushing attack accrued a 200 yard total, with James Cunningham getting top gains at 93 yards, followed by Byron Williams with 66 yards and Jesse Washington running for another 30 yards.
Clear Springs dominated their last two opponents and do not play again until September 24th, at Veteran’s Memorial stadium in League City against the Division 24-5A Brazoswood Bucs. Manvel and Sharpstown are both 4-A schools and now Clear Springs must step up their play as they begin 5-A District competition. They have the talent and speed to compete at any level and carry a 2-1 record into the next step of the season.
